Clearly, you don’t become one of the most revered and successful fighters of all time without an intense competitive streak. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is certainly one of the best pound-for-pound fighters to ever don the gloves and get in the ring, and it seems that his competitive edge doesn’t end when he steps outside of it again.
The 49-0 boxer hasn’t exactly been shy in courting controversy over the course of his long and prosperous career, even winding up in jail after pleading guilty to a domestic violence misdemeanour involving an ex girlfriend. He is renowned not just for his prodigious skill in the boxing ring, but for the pomp, bombast and sense of occasion that he brings to a fight – part of the reason the undefeated boxer has become such an enormous pay-per-view draw and global celebrity.
It seems, though, that Floyd – normally so stoic and focused once in the ring – has let his temper get the better of him in an entirely unlikely scenario.
Clearly, Floyd’s competitive streak does not end with his own pursuit of excellence, it also extends to his children’s activities – the undefeated boxer was seen at a cheer-leading event to support his daughter, but things didn’t go her way when the judges’ scores came in, and Floyd was not a happy man.
TMZ reports that Mayweather became apoplectic at his perception that the judges had cheated his daughter’s cheer squad out of the victory and, by extension, championship for which they were competing. He was apparently seen by hundreds of parents and children protesting the decision, shouting and cursing at the judges in question.
The event manager, Jeff Krapf, saw the situation as it happened, and described how Floyd, beside himself, reminded judges that he puts some of his own considerable wealth into the event, “I fund this programme” he reportedly told them.
Krapf claims that Floyd seemed so agitated and angry that he feared the situation might end in fisticuffs, “I thought, ‘Well great, here’s my big paycheck. My payday’s coming!’ But it didn’t happen.”
Thankfully, it seems that a competition official managed to remove the boxer from the ill-tempered exchange before it could escalate any further, taking him over to a quiet area away from parents and children in a bid to calm him down.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is rumoured to be engaging in intense negotiations that would see him lock horns with Irish UFC sensation Conor McGregor in a crossover mega bout that is being talked up as possibly the most lucrative stand alone fight of all time.
Certainly, the pair are a formidable match, full of the braggadocio and egotism that serves to sell fights so well. Though boxing aficionados are viewing the potential bout with a disdain bordering on incredulity, McGregor will believe that if he lands just one telling blow, it could be enough to secure what would be an astonishing knockout victory. For his part, Mayweather will look to display the defensive prowess and elusiveness that have served him so well on his journey to 49-0.
